Staying at Disney's Port Orleans Riverside: Is It Worth It for Families?
Southern charm, peaceful scenery, and a little Disney magic.
When you think about visiting Walt Disney World, the first things that probably come to mind are the rides, characters, and excitement of the theme parks. But where you stay can be just as memorable as the parks themselves!
During our September 2025 Disney vacation, we stayed at Disney's Port Orleans Resort – Riverside, a beautiful resort inspired by the charm of rural Louisiana.
From the winding pathways and lush landscaping to the peaceful waterways and Southern-inspired architecture, Riverside offers a completely different atmosphere from the hustle and bustle of the parks.
If you're considering this resort for your next Disney vacation, here's a closer look at what makes it special, what families should know, and whether it's worth adding to your list.
A Little Southern Charm in the Middle of Disney World
One of the first things that stands out about Port Orleans Riverside is its atmosphere.
Unlike some Disney resorts that feature bright colors, oversized characters, and heavily themed decorations, Riverside takes a more subtle approach to Disney magic.
You'll find beautiful gardens, towering trees, scenic walking paths, and charming buildings inspired by the American South.
The resort is divided into two distinct areas:
Magnolia Bend: Elegant, mansion-style buildings surrounded by landscaped gardens and picturesque pathways.
Alligator Bayou: Rustic, woodland-inspired buildings tucked among trees and natural scenery.
Both areas have their own character, making the resort feel like a little getaway within your Disney vacation.
For anyone who appreciates beautiful scenery and a slower-paced atmosphere, Riverside is worth considering.
A Resort That's Beautiful to Explore
One of the things I appreciate about Disney resorts is that they're often destinations in themselves.
Port Orleans Riverside is no exception.
The Sassagoula River winds through the property, creating beautiful waterfront views and peaceful places to walk.
Between the bridges, landscaping, and Southern-inspired buildings, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the scenery or snap a few pictures.
It's a refreshing contrast to the excitement of the theme parks, especially after a full day of walking, waiting in lines, and taking in everything Disney has to offer.
Sometimes, it's nice to have somewhere that feels a little quieter at the end of the day.
Family-Friendly Activities Beyond the Theme Parks
While the parks might be the main attraction, Port Orleans Riverside has plenty to offer families who want to enjoy some time at their resort.
One of its biggest features is Ol' Man Island, the resort's themed swimming area.
Here, guests can enjoy a swimming pool, waterslide, and nearby recreation areas.
The resort also features five additional leisure pools, providing more options for swimming and relaxing.
Depending on the resort's activity schedule, families may also find:
Outdoor movie nights
Campfire activities
Playground areas
Fishing experiences
Scenic walking paths
Other recreational activities
These are great options for families who want to schedule a resort day or take a break from the parks.
And when you're traveling with younger children, having activities available without leaving the resort can be especially convenient.
Dining at Port Orleans Riverside
Another important part of choosing a Disney resort is deciding where you'll eat.
Port Orleans Riverside offers several dining options, including Riverside Mill Food Court, the resort's quick-service dining location.
This is a convenient option for grabbing breakfast before heading to the parks, enjoying a casual lunch, or picking up dinner after a long day.
The resort is also home to Boatwright's Dining Hall, a table-service restaurant featuring Southern-inspired cuisine.
For guests looking to explore a little more, nearby Disney's Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter offers additional dining options, including its well-known Mickey-shaped beignets.
One of the nice things about staying in the Port Orleans area is having two neighboring resorts to explore, each with its own personality.
Getting Around Walt Disney World
Transportation is something I always think is worth researching before choosing a Disney resort, especially when traveling with children.
Port Orleans Riverside offers complimentary bus transportation to Disney's theme parks.
Guests can also take a scenic boat ride along the Sassagoula River to Disney Springs when boat transportation is operating.
That boat ride offers a different perspective of the resort area and can be a relaxing way to travel.
However, there is one thing families should keep in mind.
Port Orleans Riverside is a large resort.
Depending on where your room is located, you may have a longer walk to the main lobby, food court, swimming pool, or transportation stops.
If you're traveling with toddlers, strollers, or anyone who has difficulty walking long distances, room location is definitely something to consider.
Is Port Orleans Riverside a Good Choice for Families?
Disney's Port Orleans Riverside is considered a Moderate Resort, placing it between Disney's Value and Deluxe Resort categories.
It offers a combination of themed accommodations, recreational activities, dining options, and attractive surroundings.
For families, some of its biggest advantages include:
Beautiful, peaceful resort grounds
Multiple swimming pools
Family-friendly recreational activities
On-site dining options
Complimentary Disney transportation
Access to nearby Port Orleans French Quarter
However, it may not be the best fit for everyone.
Families who prefer a smaller resort, want more prominent Disney character theming, or hope to walk directly to certain theme parks may prefer another Disney property.
That's part of what makes Walt Disney World interesting. Each resort offers a different experience, and what works for one family might not be the best choice for another.
Would We Stay at Port Orleans Riverside Again?
Having the opportunity to stay at different Disney resorts is one of the things that makes returning to Walt Disney World exciting.
Port Orleans Riverside certainly has its own special charm.
Between the beautiful landscaping, peaceful waterways, and Southern-inspired architecture, it's easy to understand why so many guests enjoy this resort.
For families who appreciate natural scenery and a more relaxed atmosphere, it's definitely worth researching when comparing Disney accommodations.
And while the theme parks are often the highlight of a Disney vacation, sometimes the little details around your resort become part of the memories, too.
A Few Things to Know Before Visiting
Before booking a stay, there are a few things worth checking:
Room location: Some buildings are farther from the main amenities than others.
Transportation: Bus travel times and boat service can vary.
Resort activities: Recreation schedules and availability may change.
Dining: Check current restaurant hours and reservation requirements.
Refurbishments: Disney has announced guest-room refurbishment work at Port Orleans Riverside extending into 2027. Check the latest construction information before your visit.
Taking a little time to research your accommodations can make a big difference in choosing a resort that fits your family's needs.
More Adventures to Come!
One of my favorite things about traveling is discovering places that offer something a little different.
Whether it's a beautiful Disney resort, a hidden gem here in Florida, or a destination farther from home, there's always something new to explore.
Through By the Sea Creative's Explore & Discover series, I'll be sharing more travel experiences, local favorites, family-friendly outings, and destination inspiration.
Because sometimes the best adventures are the big vacations we've been looking forward to, and sometimes they're the little discoveries right in our own backyard.
